  18. John Paul II accepted the resignation of Archbishop Robert F.
  19. Sanchez, 59, of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Accusations of sexual
  20. encounters between the Archbishop and as many as five women had
  21. hit the archdiocese like an earthquake, compounding the heavy
  22. damage already wrought by a series of sexual-misconduct
  23. allegations against lower-ranking clergy. The Pope named Bishop
  24. Michael J. Sheehan of Lubbock, Texas, as a temporary replacement
  25. to restore confidence and stability.
